Ask most companies about purchasing, finance, inventory control, human resources, CRM and other functions, and you will likely find a high degree of organization, with sophisticated measurement and reporting resources. Ask about intellectual property management and you may get a far different answer. It is often a fractious world of paper record keeping, ad hoc conversations and word of mouth "systems" - and a conspicuous lack of reporting tools.

IP is a key asset for many companies, and should be the subject of board and senior management scrutiny - but there are often no useful reports to scrutinize! As pressure grows on companies to be more open regarding the "real" story of their operations, this lack of tools will be even more conspicuous.
